Chandigarh: Sector 3 police have registered a case after the Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB) alleged that a man obtained a govt small flat in Dhanas by falsely showing his sister-in-law as his wife in official records.The case relates to Small Flat No. 1419-A and stems from a complaint forwarded by the CHB following an inquiry into the allotment. Police are examining documents submitted during the allotment process.According to the complaint, Lalita Devi claimed she is Ramanand’s legally wedded wife. However, Rita Devi, wife of Ramanand’s elder brother Dev Narayan, was allegedly shown as Ramanand’s wife during the allotment process. The complaint alleged that incorrect and forged documents were used to secure the accommodation.Lalita Devi told authorities that she was unwell and staying in her native village when the allotment was processed. She alleged that Rita Devi’s documents were attached to Ramanand’s application without her knowledge and that the flat was subsequently allotted in their names.CHB records show that the flat was allotted to Ramanand and Rita Devi on Sept 5, 2014, under the Chandigarh Small Flats Scheme, 2006, on a 20-year licence.Following the complaint, the CHB’s enforcement branch inspected the flat on May 1, 2025, and found Rita Devi residing there with her family. The board subsequently issued a notice seeking an explanation from the allottee.During a hearing before the CHB on July 21, 2025, Ramanand and Lalita Devi appeared before officials. According to board records, Ramanand stated that Rita Devi’s name was mentioned in the application form and that he had completed licence formalities with her and her children. He also reportedly told the board that he had been photographed with Rita Devi.Based on the complaint and documents supplied by the CHB, police have registered a case and initiated an investigation into the alleged use of forged records in securing the flat.
