Man accused of rape after meeting woman on dating app on false promise of marriage, arrested

Gurgaon: A man has been arrested for allegedly raping a woman multiple times on the pretext of marriage after the two met on the dating app Bumble, police said on Monday.According to a complaint filed, the woman came in contact with the accused, identified as Saurabh, in January this year through the app. The two began interacting regularly, during which he gained her trust and allegedly assured her that he would marry her.Police said that on the basis of this assurance, the accused established a physical relationship with the woman on multiple occasions. The complainant later discovered that Saurabh was already married and had deliberately concealed this fact from her. She alleged that he misled her with false promises of marriage to establish physical relations.Based on the complaint, police registered a case under relevant sections pertaining to rape and cheating. “The allegations indicate that consent for the relationship was obtained under false pretences, which forms the basis of the case,” an investigating officer said.Police teams traced and arrested the accused on April 19 from Gurgaon. He is a native of Durgapur in West Bengal and was residing in Sector 71, Begampur Khatola. He works with a private firm in the city, police said.“The accused is being questioned and further investigation is underway to establish the sequence of events and gather evidence. We are also examining communication between the two to corroborate the allegations,” the officer added.Police urged citizens to exercise caution while interacting on social media and dating platforms.
