Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation announces water cuts in Uran on Tuesdays and Fridays

Navi Mumbai: Residents and defence installations in Uran will now face water cuts every Tuesday and Friday after dwindling levels at Ransai dam prompted Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) to restrict supply until next monsoon. The cuts, likely to continue until June next year, have begun earlier than usual; Uran normally faces restrictions from Dec-Jan. While Maharashtra govt announced 10% cuts statewide, Uran will face greater curbs.Ransai dam, located in Dighode village in Uran taluka, supplies about 35 million litres daily to Uran township, 20 gram panchayats, Nhava Sheva and govt establishments, including ONGC, Navy and JNPA. The reservoir’s level has fallen to 112 ft, with 4.650 MCM remaining of its 10 MCM capacity, despite the dam overflowing in July.MIDC plans to secure another 5 MLD from Cidco’s Hetawane network. Sources said accumulated sludge had reduced Ransai’s capacity, and MIDC had not desilted the dam despite a proposal.Residents expressed resentment over the extended disruption, saying two weekly cut days would place a heavier burden on households. “Earlier, we had Friday water cut under the pretext of weekly maintenance. We have to go through a two-day weekly cut now, which is too much. MIDC should have made necessary arrangements to continue daily supply as has been done by the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation,” said Uran resident Harish Gharat.
