Maharashtra cabinet expands policy for disposal of small government plots

Mumbai: One year after approving the disbursement of small, unusable, inaccessible govt plots, the state cabinet on Tuesday approved major amendments to the provisions of the Maharashtra Land Revenue (Disposal of Govt Land) Rules, 1971.The cabinet approved increasing the plot area of govt land that can be considered as small-sized, unusable, inaccessible or land-locked. Such land as per an August 2025 policy was permitted to be given to adjacent plot holders provided the area did not exceed 10% of the total area of the adjacent plot. The policy is applicable only in municipal corporation and council areas. However, following demands from elected representatives, the plot area has now been increased to 25% of the total area of the adjacent plots.Another important amendment is that a plot on which construction cannot be carried out will also be included in this policy. Such plots are to be kept vacant unless development rules are changed and construction is allowed on the plot. In such cases, the govt will have the right to recover the differential amount at the prevailing rate, said a press release.
