Lucknow man held for axe attack on mother over alleged relationship

LUCKNOW: A 28-year-old man allegedly attacked his mother with an axe after a heated argument over her alleged relationship with another man in Lucknow’s BBD police station area early Tuesday morning, leaving her critically injured. The woman is undergoing treatment at the KGMU Trauma Centre, where her condition remains serious. Police have arrested the accused and registered a case of attempt to murder.According to police, the victim, Usha Devi, a native of Barauli in Bihar’s Gopalganj district, has been living in a rented accommodation at Anora Khurd on Ayodhya Road. Her son, Sandeep Gond, works for a private company in Ahmedabad and returned home at around 3.30 am on Tuesday.According to the complaint, Mahendra Pratap, a resident of Gonda, worked at the same hostel as Usha Devi and had become a frequent visitor to her residence. Family members alleged that the two were in a relationship. Around 12 days ago, Mahendra and Usha had reportedly assaulted another relative, Sonu, following a dispute, after which Sonu left for his sister Khushboo’s house in Barabanki.Police said Sandeep had spoken to his sister over the phone and was informed about the alleged relationship between his mother and Mahendra. Acting on the information, he travelled from Ahmedabad and reached home in the early hours of Tuesday.Investigators said Sandeep allegedly found his mother and Mahendra together inside the room, triggering a heated confrontation. Following the argument, Usha Devi and Mahendra reportedly went to the terrace.Police alleged that Sandeep followed them carrying an axe and attacked both of them. Usha Devi reportedly tried to intervene but suffered severe head injuries during the assault and collapsed in a pool of blood. She was rushed to the KGMU Trauma Centre, where she remains in critical condition. Mahendra also sustained injuries in the attack.Based on a complaint lodged by Shiv Balak Shah, BBD police registered an FIR against Sandeep Gond under charges of attempt to murder. The accused was taken into custody soon after the incident and was later sent to judicial custody. Police said further investigation is underway.
