Varanasi: Gahmar police in Ghazipur district arrested two notorious looters following an exchange of fire early morning on Sunday.Ghazipur ASP (rural) Atul Kumar Sonkar said that Gahmar police were busy in night patrolling, when informers alerted them about presence of criminals near Revatipur border. As police cordoned off the area, the miscreants opened fire in their bid to escape but in retaliatory firing, two accused identified as Sudhir Pasi alias Dhruv Pasi (31) and Shameem (35) suffered bullet injuries in their leg.Police recovered cash, gold jewellery, mobile phones, a motorcycle, two country-made firearms and cartridges before sending them to hospital. Officials said the seized articles were linked to loot cases in Gahmar, Jangipur, Kotwali, Mardah and Sadat areas of Ghazipur, Sultanpur and Azamgarh.Police had intensified hunt for them following their involvement in recent cases of loot came to light, said the ASP.According to police, on July 29, Meraj Qureshi, a resident of Navli Revatipur, reported that two men had visited his meat shop claiming they wanted to sell four goats. He and his brother, Azad, accompanied them, but near a temple between Basuka and Karahiya, the accused allegedly assaulted him with a firearm, robbed him of Rs60,000 and a gold chain with a locket, and pushed him to the ground, fracturing his right hand.Police further alleged that the accused had also threatened Naveen Pandey, a resident of Gadaipur in Gahmar, in the name of the Katra gang and demanded Rs20,000 as extortion.
