Leopard mauls calf, injures another at Dhavali

Ponda: A calf was mauled and another severely injured at Dhavali in Ponda allegedly by a leopard during the intervening night of Thursday and Friday.Locals claim the leopard attacked the calves in the cattle shed of Pundalik Naik from Khalchawada, Dhavali.They said they were suspecting the movements of leopards in the area, especially during nights and had already sought action from the forest department.On Friday morning, Pundalik found a calf dead and another badly injured. His son Nilesh said they had sought installation of traps in the area.Jiss Varkey, the deputy conservator of forests, North division, said there are movements of leopards and it could have attacked the calves. “We have got the autopsy done on the carcass of the dead calf and the report is awaited. The injured calf is under treatment,” Varkey said.
