Dibrugarh: Lakhimpur district commissioner Aditya Vikram Yadav on Thursday visited the erosion-affected areas along the Subansiri river, inspecting the villages of Achera Kata, Gowalbari, Baligaon and Balibheta to assess the current situation and take stock of the damage caused by ongoing erosion along the left bank.DC Yadav conducted a part of the inspection by boat, travelling along the affected stretches to get a closer look at the erosion activity. During the visit, he also interacted with residents of the affected areas, listening to their concerns regarding the impact of erosion on their homes and agricultural land.Active erosion continues to affect significant stretches of the left bank of the Subansiri, raising concern for habitations situated in the vicinity. Officials noted that the situation warrants close monitoring, particularly ahead of the monsoon season when river levels are expected to rise.“We have reviewed the ground situation thoroughly. The affected communities deserve timely intervention and we are taking the necessary steps to ensure that a concrete plan is put in place,” Yadav said.During the visit, discussions were held with officials from the water resources department and the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) regarding the present status of erosion and possible measures that could be taken to address it. Both agencies are considered key stakeholders given their respective roles in water management and river infrastructure along the Subansiri basin.Following the inspection, the DC directed the executive engineer of the water resources department to submit a detailed report on the present condition of the affected areas. The report is expected to provide a technical assessment of the erosion and identify zones requiring priority intervention.“A detailed report based on the findings will be submitted to the competent authority at the earliest for necessary action,” an official said.A proposed anti-erosion scheme covering the affected villages is also under consideration. The scheme seeks to provide structural protection to vulnerable areas and prevent further damage along the affected corridor.Residents of the affected villages have long raised concerns about the gradual loss of land to the river. Many families in the area depend on agriculture and have seen cultivable land rendered unusable due to erosion over the years.
