Filmmaker Kunal Kohli, who made headlines in March with his glowing review of ‘Dhurandhar’, has once again spoken up in strong defence of Ranveer Singh, this time pushing back against the tendency to judge actors solely by box office results. The director offered his take on stardom, failure, and what truly defines a performer.
Kunal Kohli talks about actors facing ups and downs
In an interview with NDTV, Kunal Kohli was asked to share his assessment of how the film industry and audiences often overreact to a star’s rough patch. He said, “There is nobody, whether it is the biggest of stars, who is saved from a flop film. Everybody is going to get one. You cannot not have a flop film. It is not possible. And it happens to every single actor. That does not define you. And that’s going to happen to an actor, producer, and director.“He went further, urging everyone to stop catastrophising setbacks. The filmmaker added, “Ranveer Singh is going to give a hit film again, and he’s going to give a flop film again. He’s going to do everything. That’s just the way it goes. It’s not a big deal. Get over it. Is it a good film? Yes, it is. Move on. Accept it’s a flop and move on. And you learn so much from it.”
Kunal Kohli says don’t judge an actor by success or failure
Kunal Kohli reserved some of his most pointed remarks for audiences who reduce an actor’s worth to ticket sales. He shared, “Ranveer Singh is a wonderful actor. Some of the scenes he’s done in ‘Dhurandhar’ are absolutely brilliant. There are scenes he’s done in films that haven’t worked, which are absolutely brilliant. So how does it matter? Don’t judge an actor by the success or failure of a film, that just shows your weakness as a film viewer or filmgoer if you’re going to sit and judge people just based on box office.“
When Kunal Kohli praised ‘Dhurandhar 2 ‘
Kunal Kohli’s latest comments build on his earlier, widely shared review of ‘Dhurandhar 2’. In an Instagram clip, he said, “Congratulations, Aditya Dhar, Ranveer Singh, and Jio Studios. You all have earned 100 crores+ a day, twice. ‘Dhurandhar’ has, of course, become the biggest hit of Indian cinema, which is wonderful.”
About ‘Dhurandhar 2’
The ‘Dhurandhar’ sequel continues the story of Ranveer Singh’s character Hamza Ali Mazari – Sher-e-Baloch and the undisputed king of Lyari – tracing his transformation from Jaskirat Singh Rangi to a spy who infiltrates Pakistan to avenge terrorist attacks on Indian soil. The film brings back a powerful supporting ensemble, including Arjun Rampal, R Madhavan, Sanjay Dutt, Rakesh Bedi, Danish Pandor, and Sara Arjun. It was released in theatres on March 19, 2026.
