MUMBAI: A Kolkata-based scientist and businessman has alleged that 6,000 US dollars (around Rs 5.28 lakh) were stolen from his room at a five-star hotel in Mumbai’s Bandra (West), prompting a police investigation.The Bandra police have registered an FIR against an unidentified person under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) relating to theft in a dwelling house. Investigators are examining CCTV footage and questioning hotel staff, including room service employees, to identify the culprit.The complainant, Rahul Roy (65), told police he checked into the hotel on Wednesday afternoon for a business meeting. According to his complaint, several visitors and hotel staff entered the room during the day. Roy said he had opened his travel bag to take out medicines, after which it remained partially unzipped.Later that evening, after returning from meetings and dinner, Roy noticed that both his travel bag and wallet were open. On checking the contents, he found that 60 notes of 100 US dollars each, totalling $6,000, were missing.Police said two hotel service staff had visited the room during the day—one to activate the Wi-Fi and another to serve drinking water. A room service employee also entered the room later at night to clear used coffee cups.A police officer said investigators have not found anything suspicious so far but are questioning hotel staff and closely reviewing CCTV footage. Police have also asked Roy to verify with his family in Kolkata whether the money might have been left behind accidentally.No arrests have been made in the case so far.
