Kolkata: The civic authorities have started conducting urgent road patchwork as spells of rain have damaged several roads across Kolkata and Salt Lake. KMC roads department has also roped in a mobile road repair van for repair of parts of several thoroughfares and arterial roads.Some of the stretches of such roads that have received patchwork repair include Chittaranjan Avenue, Bowbazar, Lenin Sarani, SN Banerjee Road, APC Roy Road, MG Road, among others. Several such mobile vans are stationed at some borough offices across the city for a prompt repair drive of roads that have developed potholes due to rain. “We are pressing into service mobile road repair vans to places on demand from locals,” said a civic official.

The Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority, has started patch repairs of the pothole-ridden carriageway of old Durgapur bridge connecting Ultadanga with VIP Road. Officials said that work is being done during the night when traffic pressure is at its lowest. “Due to incessant rain, bituminous work could not be taken up. Patchwork is being done using concrete paver blocks to cover the potholed spots on the bridge’s carriageway,” said an official.The authorities are also conducting patchwork on the carriageway of the one-way slip bridge connecting VIP Road with Salt Lake. While the damaged carriageway stretch of the bridge is being repaired, the condition of roads in Salt Lake worsens, with the crater-filled stretches further widening. To prevent accidents and other mishaps, Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation is trying to conduct instant patch repairs.A large crater that developed on the stretch near CGO complex in Salt Lake has been filled up with rubbish. The civic authorities started repairing the most damaged road stretches across Salt Lake as it was identified, but work got affected due to monsoon rains.In adjacent New Town, the New Town Kolkata Development Authority has floated tenders to engage agencies and take up patch repairs of all damaged roads in the three Action Areas across the township before Durga Puja, with an estimated cost of about Rs 83 lakh.
