Bathinda: The Haryana Police barricading of the Khanauri-Data Singhwala border has brought back into focus the killing of 21-year-old farmer protester Shubhkaran Singh of Ballo village in Bathinda, who died at the spot on Feb 21, 2024, during clashes as farmers attempted to move towards Delhi.The case remains pending, with the Punjab and Haryana high court having adjourned a related petition sine die on Sep 15, 2025, until the Supreme Court decides a matter pending before it. The court had noted that a special investigation team (SIT) had been constituted through an order dated Jul 10, 2024, while a division bench had earlier adjourned a connected writ petition sine die on Aug 7, 2024, as the apex court was seized of the matter.The petition was adjourned sine die in the circumstances, with the court observing that it would be appropriate to await the Supreme Court’s decision.An FIR in Shubhkaran’s death was registered at Patran police station on Feb 28, 2024, a week after the incident.Shubhkaran had been participating in the farmers’ protest when he suffered a fatal bullet injury at Khanauri on Feb 21, 2024. His death triggered widespread protests among farmer organisations and became one of the defining incidents of the agitation.The latest blockade at the same spot has also brought renewed attention to the pending case. SKM (Non-Political) convener Jagjit Singh Dallewal said farmers were still awaiting justice in Shubhkaran’s death.“We are still waiting for justice in the case of the killing of Shubhkaran Singh,” Dallewal said.
