KGMU to transfer govt funds directly to patients’ accounts post scam

Lucknow: King George’s Medical University (KGMU) has decided to transfer funds under the Asadhya Yojana for critically ill patients directly to beneficiaries’ bank accounts for a round of treatment and diagnostic tests. The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by KGMU vice-chancellor Prof Soniya Nityananda on Saturday in view of the recent Rs 2.5 crore scam in the urology department in medicine procurement. The Asadhya Yojana provides free treatment to patients suffering from serious illnesses, including cancer.Officials said registered beneficiaries would receive financial assistance for one treatment cycle immediately. Patients seeking further treatment would have to submit prescribed documents after which their eligibility would be verified and benefits renewed.KGMU has also revised the scheme’s norms. While Asadhya cards were earlier renewed every three years, renewal will now be annual. The requirement of submitting an income certificate showing annual income below Rs 35,000 has been replaced with a ration card, said KGMU spokesperson Prof K.K Singh.
