KGMU panel finds malpractice in ophthalmology dept

Lucknow: An internal inquiry at KGMU on Tuesday found that a faculty member in the ophthalmology department was allegedly involved in malpractice, directing patients to a private shop to buy medicines and lenses even though these were available at subsidised rates in the hospital. The matter came to light last month after a patient from Gorakhpur lodged a complaint on the CM portal and with deputy chief minister Brajesh Pathak, that he was asked to buy lens (for cataract surgery) worth Rs 18,000 from outside. Two more patients had raised similar complaints. On Pathak’s instance, KGMU formed a four-member committee to probe the matter. It found that an `outsider’ used to sit outside the OPD room of the doctor and take patients to a shop in Chowk after they were told to prepare for surgery. Many patients confirmed about this practice.KGMU spokesperson Prof KK Singh said more records are being examined before taking any final action.
