Ahmedabad: A day after a powerful explosion ripped through an illegal unit in Kapadvanj town of Kheda district, police said the unit was not manufacturing finished fireworks but carbon fuses used in fireworks.The presence of a large quantity of potassium nitrate at the site has led police to suspect that the unit was manufacturing heavy-duty fuses used in large explosive devices.The two workers, Sunita and Devang, who were injured in the blast are currently stable, police said. Around 13 to 14 people were present at the factory when the explosion occurred.Based on a complaint filed by Kapadvanj mamlatdar Sangeeta Maniyar, police registered an FIR against the unit’s alleged operator, Mitul Patel, a resident of Isanpur in Ahmedabad, and other unidentified persons. They were operating the unit without mandatory licences, permissions or fire safety equipment and was storing explosive materials in a manner that endangered lives.The blaze had erupted between 9.30am and 10am on Saturday. According to the locals, the blast was heard kilometres away. Thick smoke was seen rising from the site. According to local accounts, the explosion caused extensive damage to the structure, bringing down portions of the unit’s walls and shed. Debris was scattered across the surrounding areas.The investigation has been handed over to the Kheda SOG .The explosion comes just two days after the SOG busted another illegal fireworks unit in Vaso village.
