Chennai: Three days after a 17-year-old juvenile illegally driving an earthmover fatally knocked down a 21-year-old college student in Kotturpuram, the city police detained the juvenile and arrested the owner of the earthmover.While the juvenile has since been produced before the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) and admitted to a govt observation home, the earthmover’s owner, Rajakumar, 34, was arrested for having allowed the juvenile to operate the heavy vehicle. He has since been remanded in judicial custody, and the earthmover has been seized by police.The victim, Ulagathipathi, 21, was staying at a friend’s house in Thiruvanmiyur and was pursuing his studies at a college in Semmancherry.

On the morning of July 22, he was riding his friend’s motorcycle to college along Sardar Patel Road, when the earthmover hit his bike from behind near IIT-Madras campus.Police said the impact caused Ulagathipathi to fall onto the road, following which the wheel of the earthmover ran over him. He was injured on his head and died at the scene.The Mylapore Traffic Investigation Wing registered a case and launched an investigation. They detained the juvenile and arrested the vehicle owner following investigation.
