Jaipur: Judicial officers joined transport and police officials across Rajasthan Tuesday as the Rajasthan State Legal Services Authority (RSLSA) launched a month-long statewide drive to enforce safety norms in luxury and sleeper buses amid growing concerns over fatal road accidents and passenger safety violations. The campaign was launched under the guidance of Rajasthan High Court Acting Chief Justice and RSLSA Executive Chairman Justice Sanjeev Prakash Sharma, with Member Secretary Hari Om Atrey overseeing its implementation. On the first day, joint inspection teams comprising District Transport Officers (DTOs), traffic police personnel and Secretaries of District Legal Services Authorities (DLSAs), who are judicial officers, conducted inspections at bus stands, highways, toll plazas and major checkpoints across the state.Atrey said the drive aims to ensure strict compliance with passenger safety regulations and strengthen road safety enforcement. Luxury and sleeper buses, particularly those operating on long-distance routes, are being inspected for compliance with the Motor Vehicles Act, AIS-119 (Rev-1): 2016 safety standards and the state govt’s SOP-2024.The inspections covered fitness certificates, fire extinguishers, emergency exits, emergency hammers, first-aid kits, GPS systems, speed governors, braking systems, tyres, electrical wiring, and drivers’ licences and duty hours.Officials said the transport department has been directed to initiate action wherever violations are detected.According to Atrey, the campaign was launched in response to recurring accidents involving luxury and sleeper buses, where blocked emergency exits, missing fire extinguishers, illegal body modifications and overloading have worsened the impact of crashes.Besides enforcement, inspection teams also sensitised passengers, urging them to check emergency exits and other safety equipment before boarding and report serious safety violations. The statewide campaign will continue over the next month with surprise inspections in all districts to improve compliance with safety norms and enhance passenger safety.
