Jaipur: Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) will submit to the Supreme Court an audit identifying more than 6,000 commercial establishments allegedly operating from residential plots in violation of land-use norms, following the apex court’s directions on curbing unauthorised commercial activity.JDA enforcement wing DIG Anand Sharma said the authority has completed the audit, documenting the violations and the action taken so far. “We will now forward this report to the Supreme Court. We are going to continue the next course of action against these violations following the directives of the apex court on the next date of hearing,” Sharma told TOI.“The audit has been made by collecting figures from Jan 1, 2026. However, after the last date of hearing, the JDA identified and took steps only against 150-odd buildings,” stated another official.The action follows a March 25 order by the bench of Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah and Justice R Mahadevan, which directed authorities in all state and Union Territory capitals to survey residential areas being used for commercial purposes and file affidavits by May 15, 2026.During the hearing on May 20, the bench noted submissions by amicus curiae Ajit Kumar Sinha that JDA had not appeared before the court. It criticised JDA and several other civic bodies for non-compliance, treating the lapse as serious because the case involves town-planning enforcement and protection of residential neighbourhoods from unregulated commercialisation.The court has now ordered fresh affidavits detailing follow-up action, including sealing, demolition or other lawful measures, and warned officials against “ritualistic compliance.”JDA’s affidavit, expected to be filed before the next hearing on Aug 4, will include the audit findings and details of the enforcement action taken.
