Jathedar, former SC judge discuss anti-sacrilege law

Amritsar: The officiating jathedar of Akal Takht, Giani Kuldip Singh Gargajj, on Thursday met retired Supreme Court judge Justice R S Sodhi at Sri Anandpur Sahib to discuss the Jaagat Jyot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Act, 2026 passed by the Punjab govt.According to a release issued by the Akal Takht secretariat, the two discussed the legal and religious aspects of the legislation. The release said Giani Gargajj appreciated Justice Sodhi for publicly articulating concerns over the law and helping Sikhs understand its implications.Justice Sodhi reportedly questioned the govt’s alleged interference in matters linked to Sikh religious institutions and said existing laws on sacrilege had failed to deliver justice.According to the release, both Justice Sodhi and Giani Gargajj felt the law contained “serious flaws” and alleged that Sikh institutions were not consulted before the legislation was passed. They also claimed the move appeared politically driven rather than aimed at ensuring justice in sacrilege cases.
