Amritsar: The mortal remains of Ashok Kumar (55), a native of Jalandhar who had been living in Greece for nearly three decades, were brought back to India on Saturday and received by his family at Sri Guru Ram Das Jee International Airport here.Dubai-based businessman and patron of Sarbat Da Bhala Charitable Trust, S P Singh Oberoi, said Ashok had migrated to Greece nearly 30 years ago in search of better livelihood opportunities. He died of a sudden heart attack on July 22.According to Oberoi, Ashok’s wife Rekha approached him after learning about her husband’s death. She alleged that an unidentified person from Greece had contacted her and demanded Rs 5 lakh, claiming that failing to pay the amount would result in Ashok being declared unclaimed and his last rites being conducted there.Rekha told Oberoi that the family was financially distressed and unable to arrange such a large sum. Oberoi then raised the matter with Daljit Singh, president of Gurdwara Sahib Nanak Darbar in Athens and a member of the Trust. With his assistance and intervention, the necessary arrangements were made to repatriate the mortal remains.
