JALANDHAR: Jalandhar based RTI activist Simranjit Singh was shot dead near Lovely Professional University, Phagwara on Saturday fore-noon. He was shot at from close range. Kapurthala SSP Gaurav Toora said that two bullets pierced through his head. Police recovered a .32 bore pistol lying near him and a 12 bore rifle in his Fortuner vehicle. Simranjit’s two cell phones were also lying near him.SSP said that his vehicle was parked properly, and it did not appear that he was waylaid. “We are getting CCTV footage and gathering other information to look for the accused,” he said. Jalandhar range DIG Naveen Singla also visited the spot and started supervising the investigation. He said that if required, they would also take help of the Counter Intelligence wing of the Punjab Police. Simranjit filed RTI applications and moved PILs in the Punjab and Haryana high court on various controversial issues. He had also filed complaints against senior officials. Recently he filed a petition challenging the constitutionality of the Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib (Amendment) Act 2026. In August last year, he also filed a PIL against the appointment chairman of Punjab Minorities Commission.
