Jaipur: A doctor arrested in a 2010 alleged corruption case may lose his right leg after a diabetic foot infection worsened in Jaipur Central Jail, with his family alleging delay in treatment by jail authorities.Dr Charan Jeet Singh, who was posted at the sub-district hospital in Nagar, Alwar, when he was arrested on June 9, was shifted to Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital on Sunday after his condition turned critical. He has been admitted to the ICU, and doctors are considering amputation of his right leg up to the knee, relatives said.His son, Gaurav Singh, said the case relates to alleged irregularities in incentive payments for women’s sterilisation procedures under the family planning programme during his father’s tenure as deputy chief medical and health officer in Jaipur.Gaurav alleged that his father, who has diabetes, had only mild symptoms of diabetic foot before being lodged in jail, but his condition deteriorated rapidly in custody.“Timely and proper medical care could have saved his limb. Now doctors are preparing for amputation. This is serious negligence, and the responsible officials must be held accountable,” he said.The family has demanded an inquiry into the alleged delay in treatment and sought a review of medical facilities for prisoners with chronic illnesses, saying custody should not become a risk to life.
