Gurgaon: An Italian jewellery designer has alleged that a man she met through Instagram cheated her of over Rs 1 lakh on the pretext of investing in a boutique in Gurgaon. An FIR was registered against an unidentified person after the woman flew down to the city on Sept 28.She told police at Cyber Crime West police station that she had met a man about six months earlier who introduced himself as a fashion designer from the city. He developed a relationship with her and promised her marriage. He eventually proposed that they should go into business together. She agreed and decided to send an initial investment of 1,000 euros to rent a space for their boutique.The woman transferred the money but later became suspicious when the man stopped talking to her. She felt that she had been cheated and decided to approach authorities, police said. “She subsequently approached the Italian police, but the matter was not pursued,” a senior officer said.She then contacted ACP (cyber crime) Gaurav Phogat in July through Instagram and told him about the incident. She travelled to Gurgaon, met the ACP and submitted a complaint regarding the alleged fraud. An FIR was registered under BNS Section 318 for cheating.The cyber crime team is checking the financial trail, digital communications and other technical evidence to identify the accused and establish the sequence of events. They are also examining the social media conversations between the woman and the accused and the details of the account through which the two established contact.
