Amritsar: The Amritsar Commissionerate police on Saturday claimed to have dismantled an international drug and arms smuggling network, arresting four alleged smugglers and seizing 5.557 kilograms of heroin along with two pistols. The operation was carried out as part of the Punjab Police’s ongoing crackdown on narcotics trafficking and illegal weapons. According to the director general of police (DGP), Punjab, Gaurav Yadav, preliminary investigations indicate that the arrested suspects were in contact with foreign-based smugglers and were involved in receiving consignments of heroin and firearms from across the international border.Police officials said the contraband was intended for distribution to criminal elements operating in Punjab and other parts of the country. Investigators believe the accused are part of a larger international smuggling syndicate, and efforts are underway to identify and apprehend other members of the network.Separate FIRs have been registered at the Islamabad and Chheharta police stations in Amritsar. Investigating agencies are now working to trace the network’s links, including identifying overseas handlers and additional accomplices connected to the operation.Officials said the seizure of a significant quantity of heroin and illegal firearms pointed to a coordinated attempt to fuel drug trafficking and undermine law and order in the state. The arrested suspects are being questioned, and based on the information gathered during interrogation, police have launched raids at multiple locations to track down other persons involved.
