Shillong: Hynniewtrep Youths’ Council (HYC) has expressed “grave concern” over the reported detention in Assam of 27 Bangladeshi nationals who allegedly entered India through Meghalaya’s Dawki sector.It condemned the transit of the illegal entrants through the hill state. “This raises serious and disturbing questions about the effectiveness of border surveillance and the preparedness of the agencies responsible for securing Meghalaya’s international boundary,” HYC said in a statement.It said Meghalaya could not be allowed to become a “corridor for illegal entry” and asked as to how 27 foreign nationals could allegedly cross the international border through Dawki, travel through Meghalaya and reach Assam without being detected.“The govt cannot treat this matter as resolved merely because these individuals were eventually apprehended in Assam. The real issue is how they allegedly crossed the border, how they travelled through our region without detection, and whether an organised network facilitated their movement,” HYC asked. The pressure group demanded a “thorough and time-bound investigation into the entire chain of events”.
