Raj Tiwana, the Indian-origin landlady in Canada, whose videos went viral, courtesy of her tenant who brought harassment allegations against her, broke her silence and said the tenant did not pay rent for months and was finally evicted. In an Instagram video posted in Punjabi, Tiwana said police had taken her into custody following the incident but released her shortly afterwards. “Yes, the police did take me into custody. I don’t know what information they had received, but they simply took me home and released me right then and there,” she said.Raj also claimed that the videos circulating online were not recent. According to her, the recording had been made about 10 days before it surfaced publicly, by which time the dispute had already begun affecting her customers and acquaintances. She said around 300 customers had visited her to show their support after the controversy erupted.
Landlady claims the tenants skipped rent
The landlady then gave her account of the dispute, claiming that the tenants had not paid rent for several months and had damaged her property.“I decided to make this video, to let everyone know that I am perfectly fine. Also, the tenants hadn’t been paying rent for several months; they were harassing me and damaging the property,” she said.Raj said she had been pursuing the matter through the Tenancy Board and claimed that the tenants were evicted the previous week.“I had been dealing with the Tenancy Board regarding this, and they were finally evicted last week,” she said, adding that the tenants released their videos after the eviction. She also said lawyers, police and the Tenancy Board were now involved in the matter.
How the dispute began
The controversy, as shown in a series of Instagram videos, began with a dispute over a barbecue at the property. In one of the videos shared by the Canadian tenant, Raj was objecting to him using a barbecue in the garden with a friend. The tenant can be heard asking why she was trying to intimidate them while they were cooking dinner. Tiwana removed the food from the grill and told him that he could not use it on her property. She also said she would call the police. The confrontation later escalated. Another video showed Raj entering the tenant’s home and throwing rocks in his direction, followed by a physical confrontation. The tenant repeatedly asked her to stop. The Canadian man then posted further videos accusing the landlady of harassment and alleging that the barbecue incident was part of a broader pattern of confrontations. One of his later posts showed police arriving at Raj’s home. Officers were seen telling her that she was under arrest before handcuffing her and escorting her to a police vehicle. In the videos, the tenant asserted that the rent was paid and he continued to share accounts of harassment by other tenants.
