Panaji: The inactive Smart City command and control centre in Panaji has come under scrutiny after massive traffic congestion brought the city to a standstill on Sunday. Corporator Jack Sukhija questioned why the facility failed to monitor and manage the situation.Sukhija on Tuesday said the centre — set up under the Smart City project to enable monitoring and coordination — was no longer active when it should have been used for traffic management to avert the congestion.“What happened on Sunday is unacceptable and can put a strain on resources for tourism,” he said.Calling for stronger event planning, Sukhija proposed that all mega events drawing more than 500 people be moved outside Panaji to avoid traffic disruptions and reduce pressure on the city’s infrastructure.

He suggested the pedestrian spine at Patto, which is the venue for the annual Festa do Povo, as a suitable alternative, citing its ability to handle large crowds and the availability of ample parking. His remarks follow Sunday’s traffic snarls, which were triggered by four simultaneous events — the Vibrant Goa Summit, a seminar, the Ironman marathon and Oktoberfest — leaving several city roads crawling.
