Gurgaon: A 30-year-old man has been rescued from six years of bonded labour in Faridabad’s Shahbad village by police.Sundar, a resident of Tajpur in Faridabad, was allegedly spotted walking on the road by Jaganlal (47) around six years ago. Jaganlal brought him home, put him to work at his house and on his farm, and kept him in chains.Sundar’s family said he suffers from a mental illness. The matter came to light Wednesday when the police control room received a call from a local, who said a youth was being held against his will at a nearby house. A team from Tigaon police station arrived at Jaganlal’s residence and freed Sundar. He was admitted to hospital for treatment.A senior police officer said it emerged during the investigation that Sundar had managed to escape last week and started working at another person’s home. “Jaganlal, however, learned of his whereabouts, dragged him back and assaulted him,” the officer said.Based on a complaint filed by Sundar’s cousin, a case was registered against Jaganlal, his wife and an unknown person under Bonded Labour System (Abolition) Act and BNS sections related to wrongful confinement, kidnapping, unlawful compulsory labour and criminal intimidation, among others.Jaganlal was arrested Thursday and produced in court, which remanded him in one-day police custody. Cops said statements from Sundar and others were being recorded to verify the allegations. “Family members are also being questioned because they did not file a missing persons report when Sundar disappeared,” a police officer said.
