IED blast: Bomber’s brother leads cops to RPG, RDX & pistols

Patiala: Police investigating Monday night’s IED blast on railway tracks near Shambhu have recovered a cache of militant weaponry, including a rocket propelled grenade (RPG), a 2.3kg IED, a hand grenade, explosives and high-end pistols from Panjwarh Khurd village in Tarn Taran after interrogating the arrested suspects, Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav said on Wednesday.The suspected saboteur, Jagroop Singh alias Jupa, had died in a premature explosion while planning the IED, said police. Among those arrested is his younger brother Satnam Singh alias Satta. The seizures were based on disclosures by Satnam, the DGP said.The IED was a ‘sticky bomb’, used mostly against vehicles and structural targets. The seized arms and explosives include three detonators with electric wire, two packs of RDX weighing nearly 1.5kg, two timer switches, a P-86 hand grenade, and three pistols (a 9mm Glock and two of .30 calibre) along with 84 bullets.“Investigations have revealed that this terror module was backed by a Malaysia-based entity, with financial support routed through Malaysia by the main handler using the name Jujhar Singh,” said Yadav.Jujhar was in touch with USA-based Surinder Singh Thikriwal, who has been involved in several terror modules, and Pakistan-based Ranjeet Singh alias Neeta — a designated terrorist — was also in contact with the module through a well-layered network, said the DGP.Yadav said the investigation was focusing on determining the involvement of this module in the Sirhind railway tracks blast of Jan this year and the grenade attack on a crime investigation agency unit in Moga on the intervening night of Nov 6-7.SSP Patiala Varun Sharma said Satnam revealed that he and Jagroop had concealed a major part of the consignment in their stable and car in Panjwarh Khurd village. AIG Sukhjinder Singh Mann said Patiala Police and the Special Operations Cell formed a joint team, searched the locations disclosed by the accused and recovered the cache.
