Ahmedabad: A special CBI court in Ahmedabad on Friday sentenced an income tax department officer to three years’ rigorous imprisonment after holding him guilty of accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000 from a charitable trust in 2013.According to a statement from the prosecuting agency, the court convicted I-T officer (OSD) Jarnail Singh, who was posted in the office of the additional commissioner of Income Tax (Audit), and imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 on him.The CBI registered the case against Singh on allegations that he demanded an illegal gratification of Rs 10,000 from an NGO, Shrilekha Vividhlaxi Charitable Trust, for issuing a certificate under sections 11 and 80G of the Income Tax Act, thereby giving exemption to it.He was caught red-handed by CBI while accepting bribe of Rs 10,000 from the NGO’s office bearer. The accused was arrested on Feb 22, 2013 and a chargesheet in the case was filed on Oct 31, 2013.
