Hyderabad: Hyderabad-based deep-tech startup WiSig Networks has partnered with global satellite communications company Viasat to test an indigenous 5G NB-IoT Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) chipset and module for satellite-based Internet of Things (IoT) applications. The chipset, developed by WiSig using technology originating at IIT Hyderabad, is designed for low-power satellite connectivity and supports applications such as maritime asset tracking, fisherman safety, disaster response, government communications and remote telemetry.Announced during Bharat Innovates 2026 in Nice, France, the collaboration involves testing WiSig’s 3GPP Release 17-compliant chipset at Viasat’s UK laboratories for use on its global L-band satellite network. The solution has been developed with support from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) under India’s 5G/6G research initiatives and the Design Linked Incentive (DLI) Scheme. The collaboration aims to expand standards-based satellite IoT services in India and global markets, particularly in regions lacking terrestrial mobile coverage. Following successful testing, the Made-in-India module is expected to become part of Viasat’s worldwide satellite IoT ecosystem, highlighting India’s growing capabilities in semiconductor and telecom innovation.
