Chandigarh: The Punjab State and Chandigarh (UT) Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognisance of the Industrial Area Phase II building collapse in Chandigarh that claimed two lives and has sought a report from the Deputy Commissioner, Chandigarh.The Commission, comprising Chairperson Justice Sant Prakash, Member Justice Gurbir Singh and Member Jitender Singh Shunty passed the order after taking note of a news report.A two-storey building collapsed on Saturday evening while renovation work was underway in Industrial Area, Phase II. An NDRF team equipped with advanced rescue equipment carried out rescue operations for nearly five hours before pulling out the two persons trapped under the debris. Both later succumbed to their injuries at the hospital.In its order, the Commission directed the Deputy Commissioner, Chandigarh, to submit a report one week before the next date of hearing. The matter has been listed for further hearing on August 5, 2026.
