HPNLU student attempts suicide, alleges ragging and harassment

Shimla: A student of Himachal Pradesh National Law University (HPNLU), Shimla, allegedly attempted suicide on Wednesday by cutting a vein on his hand after accusing some fellow students and university staff of ‘harassment and ragging’.He is undergoing treatment at Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), Shimla, while police are investigating the matter. Before the incident, student Nikhil Prakash recorded a video in which he, while crying, alleged that his complaints to university authorities and teachers had not been acted upon. He accused some students of harassing him, filing false FIRs and an anti-ragging complaint against him. He also alleged receiving death threats. Prakash claimed he had complained about ragging earlier and possessed evidence, including CCTV footage, to support his allegations.He said he had been approaching the police and university administration for nearly a month. HPNLU, in a press statement, mentioned that the inquiry was underway and no final conclusion had been reached. It said complaints would be examined under applicable rules. The university stated that the complainant has independently lodged an FIR at Police Station Arki, and the university, in compliance with its obligations under the Anti-Ragging framework, had also informed the Police Chowki, Dhami, regarding the matter.
