Heavy showers narrow Goa’s monsoon rainfall deficit to 47%

Panaji: Goa’s monsoon rainfall deficit has narrowed to 47% following a surge in rainfall across the state over the past 24 hours, according to the India Meteorological Department data.The state recorded an average of 56mm rainfall on June 25, against the normal of 31.6mm, representing a 77.4% excess for the day.Despite the recent spell, Goa continues to remain below seasonal rainfall norms. From June 1 to June 25, the state has received 388.7mm rainfall against the normal 733.6mm, leaving an overall deficit of 47%. North Goa has recorded a deficit of 51.2%, while South Goa’s shortfall stands at 43.3%.Rain gauge stations across Goa recorded heavy to moderate rainfall during the 24-hour period ending at 8.30am on June 25.Under the heavy rainfall category (64.5mm to 115.5mm), the highest rainfall was reported from Dharbandora 93.4mm, Panaji 92.6mm, Ela, Old Goa 84.4mm, Margao 69.6mm and Canacona 68.8mm.Locations receiving moderate rainfall (15.6mm to 64.4mm) included Ponda 60.8mm, Pernem 57.5mm, Dabolim 55.2mm, Mormugao 46.8mm, Quepem 45.4mm, and others.Observations from meteorological observatories showed relatively cool daytime temperatures accompanied by very high humidity.The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast moderate rainfall over Goa during the coming days, with isolated spells of heavy rain likely.A yellow alert has been issued for the state and will remain in force till July 1. The warning indicates that heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places across Goa. At the same time, from June 28 onwards, there is also a possibility of heavy rainfall accompanied by gusty winds of 40-50kmph at a few locations.
