Kolkata: The low-pressure area that intensified into a depression grazed the city, with Kolkata escaping with spells of light to moderate rain on Thursday. With this system moving towards Jharkhand, the Met office said the city will continue to get more rain but the possibility of intense showers has become less as the system’s distance from the city keeps increasingThe low pressure system transformed into a depression by Thursday morning over coastal Bengal, close to northwest of Canning, about 40 km southeast of Kolkata. Met officials said it came as close as 20 km towards the southern direction of the city by the afternoon.Under the impact of this system along with the monsoon trough, the city sky remained cloudy for most part of the day with intermittent rain. “The system triggered light to moderate rain only because clouds from systems like this formed during monsoon can get drifted faster due to high wind shear,” explained HR Biswas, head at the Regional Meteorological Centre Kolkata.While Alipore recorded 24-hour rain amount of 30 mm on Thursday, the system triggered extremely heavy rain in some districts. Haldia recorded 242.6 mm during the same period. Canning logged 150 mm rain. At 29.3 degrees, maximum temperature was 3.1 notches below normal.
