HC to hear plea against Sonam’s bail on May 18

Shillong: Meghalaya high court is likely to decide on the state govt’s petition seeking cancellation of the bail granted to Sonam Raghuvanshi by a lower court on May 18.Sonam, the prime accused in the murder of her husband Raja Raghuvanshi at Sohra (Cherrapunji) in May last year, was granted conditional bail by additional deputy commissioner (judicial) Shillong, Dashalene R Kharbteng, on April 27, citing procedural lapses during her arrest. The state govt, however, maintained that Sonam was aware of the grounds of her arrest and submitted supporting documents in court on May 4, seeking revocation of the bail.A single bench of Justice Wanlura Diengdoh on Tuesday heard the criminal petition filed by the state challenging the bail order.Sonam’s counsel, S Thapa, sought adjournment to advance arguments, stating that he had received a copy of the petition only on Monday. The HC-appointed special public prosecutor for the case, Nitin Khera, argued for a short adjournment. After hearing both sides, the Court adjourned the matter and listed it for hearing on May 18.
