HC puts BFI general body meeting on hold till Nov 13

Chandigarh: The Punjab and Haryana high court on Tuesday directed the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) to keep its general body meeting in abeyance till the next date of hearing on Nov 13.The directions follow a petition filed by BFI president Ajay Singh challenging a notice proposing a no-confidence motion against him.Justice Tribhuvan Dahiya issued notice of motion in the petition filed by Ajay Singh and directed one of the respondents – the secretary general of the federation – to keep the general body meeting in abeyance till the next date of hearing. The meeting had been scheduled for Oct 28.Appearing for the petitioner, senior advocate Chetan Mittal, along with advocates Mayank Aggarwal, Mohit Garg, Shashwat Sharma and R S Yadav, contended that Ajay Singh was the president of the Boxing Federation of India, constituted under the National Sports Governance Act, 2025.The petitioner contended that, according to the federation’s constitution, the president could not be removed from office except through a no-confidence motion supported by an affirmative vote of not less than three-fourths of the general body members at a specially convened meeting. It was further contended that a special general meeting could be convened only by the president or upon a request by two-thirds of the members of the executive committee.According to the petition, the secretary general issued a notice dated Oct 8, proposing a no-confidence motion against Ajay Singh and convening a general body meeting for the purpose. The petitioner alleged that the actions violated the stipulations contained in the federation’s constitution.During proceedings, the petitioner’s counsel contended that the notice was issued without jurisdiction. They also argued that the no-confidence motion was issued amid an inquiry into serious allegations against the secretary general, who was seeking time to file a reply, and that a show-cause notice had subsequently been issued. The petitioner also alleged that such action could adversely affect the future of players participating in national and international events and that, being a national sports body, Boxing India was affiliated with the International Federation and that such action by the secretary general on behalf of the federation would have consequences. After hearing the matter, the high court issued notice for Nov 13.“In the meanwhile, the second respondent is directed to keep the general body meeting in abeyance till the next date of hearing,” the court order read.
