HC orders 3 Bangla youths’ deportation amid ‘pushback’

Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday directed the deportation of three Bangladeshi nationals, who had so far served 1.9 out of their three years of sentence in a Bengal prison, pointing out they could be deported amid the ongoing “pushback”.Justice Tirthankar Ghosh was of the view that “what purpose would be solved by keeping the Bangladeshi nationals in custody when the govt was deporting them.”The three Bangladeshis—Md Ismail Hoque (19), Md Musarul (19) and Rana Parvez (22)—had illegally entered the Indian territory on Sept 10, 2024. A complaint was registered against them at the Raiganj Police Station under Section 14 of the Foreigners Act. A charge sheet was filed against them on Jan 31, 2025, citing eight witnesses. During the framing of charges on May 6, 2025, the three pleaded guilty and the same day, they were convicted and sentenced to imprisonment for three years. They were also fined Rs 5,000.The three moved the single bench of Justice Tirthankar Ghosh, challenging the order from the North Dinajpur court. Their counsel, Advocate Sourov Mondal, pleaded that since they were young and had every possibility of reformation, minimum punishment be prescribed. While the minimum punishment prescribed was two years, the court ordered three years in prison.END
