Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court in a July 14 order directed Bengal Police to arrest cricketer Abhishek Porel and seize his electronic devices. Porel is facing criminal charges of rape lodged by a third-year medical student who alleged she was sexually assaulted and abused with a false promise of marriage. She had moved HC alleging that Porel has also threatened to make public photographs of their intimate moments.Justice Saugata Bhattacharya said cops should arrest Porel and seize devices “so that obnoxious data stored in it cannot be disseminated”. Cops have told the court they have seized a pen drive and sent it for forensic examination, but Porel remains at large. The Mogra Police Station (in Hooghly) is investigating the case.According to the complaint, Porel had first met the woman in Jan 2023, and they were regularly in touch since April 2023. Porel had promised to marry her and their families were involved in the plans. The woman claimed that on April 2, 2026, she was tortured, isolated, even denied food, when she went to meet Porel in Delhi. She was hospitalised. She alleged Porel had threatened her, prompting her to lodge the FIR. She moved HC alleging police inaction.
