Kolkata: Doctors at the haematology department at NRS Medical College & Hospital (NRSMCH) have conducted a successful haploidentical (half-matched 5/10) bone marrow transplant on a 32-year-old man. This time the procedure was done on patient suffering from aplastic anaemia.According to doctors, Brajagopal Kamilya had presented with generalized weakness and pallor with bleeding requiring recurrent blood transfusion, intermittent fever, bruises over his body and immense fatigue for three months during March, 2025 for which he was primarily evaluated at AIIMS Bhubaneswar.Investigations like bone marrow biopsy revealed severe aplastic anaemia and he was referred to NRSMCH. Subsequently he was counselled about allogenic transplant and temporarily put on immunosuppressive therapy along with supportive transfusions. Hailing from Midnapore, Kamilya was faced with a life-threatening condition where the bone marrow is unable to produce enough blood cells for long periods. He was not responding to various medicines and that made his life miserable.While a fully matched transplant is ideal, doctors found the stem cell of his 44-year-old brother, who was the donor, was only half-matched. Called Haplo-transplant this procedure causes significant challenge due to HLA gene mismatch. Despite the challenges, the team under the leadership of haematology professor Sandeep Saha conducted the procedure few weeks ago. Post the transplant, Kamilya is doing well as is looking forward to a transfusion free chapter of his life.“Taking up this case was possible because of the coordination with post graduate trainees, nurses, and various departments, including microbiology, radiotherapy, blood bank etc. and NRS administration that include principal Sanat Kumar Ghosh, MSVP professor Manabendra Sarkar and additional medical superintendent Sharmila Maulik,” said Saha.
