Habitual offender held with countrymade pistol in Maloya

Chandigarh: A 22-year-old habitual offender was arrested with a countrymade pistol and a live cartridge in Maloya by the district crime cell (DCC) of Chandigarh Police.The accused, Sunil alias Begi, a resident of Jhampur village in Mohali, was arrested following a tip-off that he was planning to commit a crime in the city.Police said a DCC team on patrol received information that Sunil, who has a criminal record, was sitting in a park near Radha Swami Satsang Bhawan in Maloya. Acting swiftly, the team raided the spot and apprehended him.During the search, police recovered a countrymade pistol and one bullet, following which a case under the Arms Act was registered and the weapon seized.Further verification revealed that Sunil was previously booked in two cases, including robbery and Arms Act violations, by Chandigarh Police in 2023.The accused was produced before a local court, which granted police remand for further interrogation. Investigators are now probing the source of the weapon, its intended use and the accused’s possible involvement in other criminal activities in and around the city.
