GURGAON: A former security guard who had worked at a temple in Gurgaon for 12 years allegedly returned to the premises and stole 4.786kg of silver ornaments and Rs 34,000 from the donation box, police said.According to police, he was arrested from his village in Rohtak within six hours of the theft, and the stolen property was recovered.“The theft took place at Sudarshan Mata Temple near Rajmahal Hotel and New Colony Chowk in the early hours of Wednesday. Around 5am, the temple priest alerted a committee member about the theft. On reaching the temple, the member found that the silver umbrella of Lord Hanuman, earrings of Mata Rani, a chakra attached to a crown, other silver ornaments and the donation box were missing.” a police officer said.A case was registered at City police station under Section 305 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Police teams examined CCTV footage from the temple and other available evidence to identify the suspect, the officer added.The accused was identified as Rohtash, 53, a resident of Chulliana village in Rohtak district.A team comprising ASI Sanjay and head constable Kuldeep arrested him from his village on Wednesday. Police said 4.786kg of silver ornaments and Rs 34,000 in cash were recovered from his possession.“During questioning, we learnt that Rohtash had worked as a security guard at the temple for around 12 years and left the job about two months ago. His long association with the temple had given him familiarity with its arrangements and the ornaments kept there,” DCP (West) YVR Sashi Shekhar.According to police, he was aware that the idols were adorned with silver ornaments and allegedly took advantage of the night-time opportunity to commit the theft.
