Gujarat bans manufacture, sale and use of glue traps

Gandhinagar: The state agriculture, farmers welfare and cooperation department has issued a notification, imposing a ban with immediate effect on the manufacture, sale, storage and use of glue traps or sticky boards used to catch rats and other small creatures.An official statement said glue traps have very strong, non-drying glue applied to them. When an animal or bird gets stuck to it, it gets severely injured in its attempt to free itself. Animals die in an extremely painful manner, writhing in agony due to hunger, thirst, suffocation or injury, the statement added.Govt said in a statement that such process is a violation of Section 11(1) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 and the guidelines of the Animal Welfare Board of India state such a method is inhuman and illegal.The statement added that according to a circular issued by the industries and mines department, the listing and sale of glue traps has been removed with immediate effect from Government e-Marketplace portal and from other e-commerce and online platforms. All govt departments, boards, corporations and local self-government institutions have been prohibited from buying or using glue traps.Govt said in the statement that an offence can be registered against those who violate this ban under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Police and Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) have been empowered to register complaints in this regard, govt said.
