Gandhinagar: Gujarat’s proposed AI education programme for higher education institutions will rely on discipline-specific case studies ranging from Ahmedabad’s air quality and fake legal citations to faulty AI-generated code and crop disease detection, giving students hands-on exposure to both the capabilities and limitations of the technology.According to a presentation prepared by the education department for the rollout, eight AI learning tracks will use practical exercises tailored to academic disciplines to familiarise students with real-world applications of artificial intelligence. In arts and humanities, students will investigate fabricated citations, use optical character recognition to digitise Gujarati magazines from the 1950s and compare AI-generated translations with human translations of official circulars.Science and mathematics students will analyse Ahmedabad’s air quality, examine mathematical errors produced by AI, undertake titration laboratory exercises and study rainfall and reservoir data. The presentation said students of commerce, management and finance will verify figures in annual reports, develop a marketing plan for a Surat textile trader, prepare a marketing strategy for an MSME and identify possible fraud indicators.Engineering students will test faulty AI-generated code, explore predictive maintenance for pumps, prepare civil construction site reports and identify errors arising from confusion between kilonewtons and newtons. The education track includes preparing a Class VIII lesson plan, checking assessment rubrics, examining methods to detect AI-generated homework and developing teaching strategies for mixed-ability classrooms.Students in healthcare and life sciences will analyse outpatient department waiting times, prepare a Gujarati diabetes information leaflet, practise data de-identification, track dengue trends and assess unsafe AI-generated dosage advice. The draft AI education policy, which has received in-principle approval from the govt, states that agriculture students will study cumin price trends, examine leaf photographs for possible crop diseases, explore dairy cooperative operations and prepare explanations of govt schemes. For law and public administration students, case studies will involve identifying fabricated case-law references, classifying public grievances, summarising Right to Information material and assessing the fairness of welfare schemes. The state education department has prepared a draft policy proposing a three-tier AI training programme for five lakh students across higher education institutions. The programme is intended to take learners from basic AI literacy to discipline-specific applications and advanced, employment-oriented skills.
