Ahmedabad: Gujarat will offer 300 additional MBBS seats this academic year, bringing the state’s total capacity in govt and private medical colleges from 7,200 to 7,500. All the new additions are concentrated in private institutions.The expansion follows approvals from the National Medical Commission (NMC). Four private medical colleges have received 50 additional seats each, while two colleges saw 50 seats reinstated after previous reductions.Under the new seat distribution, capacity at the medical college in Visnagar rises from 150 to 200, with matching 50-seat increases at facilities in Nadiad and Surat. The capacity of a medical college in Surendranagar rises from 100 to 150 seats.“Additionally, private medical colleges in Bharuch and Amreli, which previously operated at 200 seats before being scaled back to 150 in recent years, have had 50 seats restored each, taking their combined restored capacity to 100 seats,” said an official associated with the process.The expansion comes as medical admissions begin across Gujarat following the announcement of the NEET re-test results. While no new govt medical colleges have been established in recent years, private institutions and the GMERS model have steadily expanded their presence.Experts anticipate a possible drop in merit cut-offs this year. “Around 12,000 fewer students from the state qualified for medical admissions compared to last year,” said an official involved in the process. Clearer admission trends are expected to emerge by mid-Aug.
