Govt notifies tightened poultry transport rules

Panaji: In a notification issued on Thursday, state govt directed that every consignment of live poultry must comply with applicable animal transportation laws. Poultry entering Goa must be accompanied by a certificate from the competent authority at the place of origin, confirming prescribed particulars, including the birds’ source, health status, and fitness for transportation, wherever applicable.Transporters are required to carry all the necessary documents, permits, certificates, and records, and must produce them for inspection when demanded by the competent authority. The notification also mandates humane handling during transit, with measures to minimise overcrowding, injuries, distress, and the risk of disease transmission. Consignments that do not meet the stipulated requirements will not be allowed to enter Goa, and violations may invite legal action. The directive aligns with the state’s Mukhyamantri Swayampurna Goa Poultry Development Policy, 2025, which aims to build a sustainable and hygienic poultry trade in Goa.TOI reported on Oct 27 that the corporation intends to establish the source of poultry consignments, monitor transportation time, and ensure that birds are accompanied by health certificates issued by qualified veterinarians. Under the transportation rules, poultry cannot be transported continuously for prolonged periods; birds must be provided food and water, with a rest break every six hours.
