Gold, arms, cash seized in pre-election check

Kolkata: Police on Monday seized around 1,160.6 gm gold jewellery, valued at Rs 92.1 lakh, on Amherst Street in the Jorasanko constituency. The occupants of the vehicle, in which the gold was being ferried, could not produce valid papers. In a raid around 12.18 pm on Tuesday, a vehicle was stopped at the Lord Sinha Road-AJC Bose Road crossing and Rs 1.5 lakh unaccounted-for cash, with three one-dollar currency notes, was seized. The amount was deposited in the Shakespeare Sarani PS. An hour earlier, around 11 pm, a check of a private car at the Phoolbagan crossing led to the seizure of Rs 1.4 lakh unaccounted-for cash. On Monday, Rs 11.6 lakh cash was seized from a car on D H Road. At Nandakumar in East Midnapore, a coordinated operation at Nikashi Bazar led to the recovery of Rs 2 crore unaccounted-for cash, along with 16 illegal firearms and 20 rounds of ammunition. While the BJP alleged Trinamool intended to use the money to influence voters in Moyna, Trinamool claimed the money was for cooperative society loans. In West Burdwan, Railway Police seized Rs 49.9 lakh unaccounted-for cash and arrested two men from Patna.
