Goa to deploy AI cams to look inside tinted cars

Panaji: Goa is set to roll out an advanced AI-powered surveillance system aimed at “improving law enforcement and road safety”, said transport minister Mauvin Godinho on Wednesday.“The AI-enabled surveillance cameras are designed to strengthen policing, reduce crime, and improve road safety,” said Godinho, speaking at the inauguration of the new transport department head office in Porvorim.“The new cameras will be equipped with high-speed detection, night vision, and the ability to identify individuals even inside vehicles with tinted glass. The system can also capture small number plates with precision, enabling us to track offenders more effectively,” he told TOI.He also said that the system would be monitored through a command and control centre that will come up in Panaji, enabling real-time tracking of violations and suspicious activity. The rollout will take place in phases. In the first phase, 92 cameras will be installed at strategic locations across Goa. “Work is already underway, with approximately 25 locations expected to become operational within the next two weeks. We aim to scale this up to around 50 locations within two months. We plan to cover over 200 sites in the future. The long-term goal is to monitor all major junctions and interior villages in Goa,” he said.Godinho said the initiative will deter crime and reduce traffic violations. Also speaking at the inauguration, chief minister Pramod Sawant said that so far 4,700 driving license holders who were issued challans for various traffic offences have been given driver refresher training at RTOs, which includes road safety and traffic education, to ensure responsible driving and road safety. He further said that the new 5,000sqft head office of the directorate of transport was established with fully-integrated systems and 49 transport services that are online-enabled.
