Guwahati: Starting Sunday, all recreational spaces in the city managed by the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) have begun charging entry fees for visitors, ending several months of free public access, now limited to morning hours between 6 am and 10 am.Under the revised fee structure, visitors entering after 10 am must pay an entry fee. Children below nine years of age, senior citizens above 75, and persons with disabilities are exempt.GMDA officials said the revised rates are intended to generate revenue for improved sanitation, maintenance, and security. “Maintaining public parks has become increasingly expensive, and the revised rates will ensure cleaner, safer, and better-managed green spaces,” a GMDA official said.The current entry fees for popular recreational spaces in the city are: Radhika Shanti Udyan (Rs 60), Nehru Park (Rs 50), Shraddhanjali Kanan (Rs 30), Brahmaputra Riverfront Park (Rs 60), and the Brahmaputra River Heritage Centre (Rs 150).The decision has triggered mixed reactions, with many residents criticising the steep hike. “I do not mind paying to enter the park, as I understand the revenue can help support conservation efforts and improve the overall visitor experience. However, the recent hike in entrance fees will definitely pinch my pocket. For many visitors — especially families, students, and budget travellers — the increased cost could make regular visits less affordable,” said Abhinav Dowerah, a city resident.Nilkamal Das, another resident, said public parks serve as affordable recreational spaces and higher rates could discourage regular visitors. “We welcome the rates, but it should have been more gradual. Earlier, the entry fee for Nehru Park was just Rs 10 for adults, but now it is Rs 50 per person,” he said.As the new rates take effect across GMDA-managed parks, residents said they will be watching closely to see whether the promised improvements in maintenance and visitor facilities are reflected on the ground.
