GMC spot fine app to curb littering & promote civic sense

Guwahati: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) on Wednesday launched a dedicated spot fine app to strengthen civic enforcement and encourage residents to help keep the city clean ahead of Durga Puja. The app will help civic officials to record and manage fines for violations such as littering, improper waste disposal, illegal dumping, open defecation and damage to public infrastructure, the GMC officials said. It also allows citizens to pay penalties in cash or online modes.“The initiative is aimed not at revenue collection but at promoting civic sense and encouraging citizens to fulfil their civic responsibilities,” GMC mayor Mrigen Sarania said. The initiative comes as the civic body seeks to strengthen monitoring of public spaces and improve compliance with municipal regulations. By digitally recording violations and managing penalty payments, the corporation aims to bring greater accountability to its enforcement process. The GMC had previously provided six dedicated vehicles to each of its divisions to support implementation on the ground. The vehicles are expected to help enforcement personnel monitor civic violations, respond to complaints and ensure that municipal rules are followed more effectively.Officials said the combination of digital monitoring and field-level enforcement would encourage residents to adopt better waste disposal practices and help keep Guwahati clean.
